A koala sitting on the ground is often a sign they are sick and need medical attention.
Koalas are arboreal (tree dwelling) mammals and should only be seen on the ground when they are on the move to their next tree.

Did you know koalas can jump to move from tree to tree?! 🐨🌳
It’s a sight most people are surprised to see but it’s something our clever koalas, with their long claws and amazing climbing ability, have the ability to do.
Unlike gliding species, koalas are only able to jump a few meters which they carefully measure up before they take the plunge. It’s not uncommon to see young koalas practising their jumping between small forks in a tree and as they build up their confidence, they start to jump longer distances.

It’s koala breeding season, so our local koalas

It’s koala breeding season, so our local koalas are on the move and looking for love. 💚 They may be found in backyards, crossing roads and may get caught in dangerous situations.
We can all help protect them by:
▶ Driving carefully and looking out for koalas crossing roads from dusk until dawn.
▶ Containing your dog at night and providing them with wildlife avoidance skills to protect koalas.
▶ Making your pool koala safe by ensuring you have safe escape options such as a rope in the pool.
▶ Contacting your nearest wildlife rescue or 1300 ANIMAL (264 625) if you come across a sick, injured or orphaned koala.
▶ Considering koala-friendly fencing options. If you have a fence that may prevent koalas from accessing safe habitat, consider adding a simple escape route such as a timber post positioned at an angle to the fence. This allows koalas to climb over the fence and escape danger.
▶ Reporting all wild koala sightings in Queensland to the QWildlife Koala Sighting App.
